    Peaceful Yoga Modifications For Pregnancy

Though it was almost 18 years ago, I still remember the moments after finding out I was pregnant with my first daughter. I walked the streets of Brooklyn to an inner soundtrack playing “What A Difference A Day Makes”, floating in a state of complete bewilderment.  In truth, what a difference a moment makes—the moment when you find out you’re pregnant, your life has completely changed. Nothing is the same, and that includes your yoga practice.

There are shifts in hormones, emotions, and your physical self. These changes are exciting (they mean your babe is healthily on the way!), but can be can also be quite intimidating. You may wonder how your new body and new baby will affect your yoga practice, specifically if you’ll have time, or … Read more of this article published here on the Wanderlust Yoga Festival blog.

Full Moon Ceremony To Activate Self-Care

This week – Wednesday, January 31, 2018 – is a Super Blue Blood Moon. This means it is the second full moon within the month AND a lunar eclipse.

This Super Blue Blood Moon has got me ruminating about self-care and asking myself and the women in my community – “Is self-care part of your life only once in a blue moon?”

I created some space to create my own definition of self-care. I’ll share that below and I’ll provide journal and writing prompts that will help illuminate your relationship to self-care and help you discern if you have daily rituals of nourishment and if not, to find ways to lovingly and manageably bring them into your life.

Be sure to download my free self-care chart here

Print and post it in your view.

Upon completing the following ceremony, you can X or check off under
acknowledging this ceremony and journaling exercise
    as a ritual of nourishment.

Before I share those journal prompts…

Get your journal.  Light a candle.  Burn that palo santo or sage.

Drop into your seat, scan your body and with your exhales, release the sound of “ahhhhhhh”.

Allow each exhalation to signify a release of whatever you were doing, whatever was on your mind prior to your presence in this ceremony.

Allow each inhalation to signify a homecoming, a return to your body temple and to the sacred now moment.

Once you feel centered, read a bit of wisdom from my friend, Dr. Ezzie Spencer, about the significance of this Super Blue Blood Moon.  Journal prompts follow.

What is a Super Blue Blood Moon…

This happens when a lunar eclipse coincides with a Super Moon that also happens to be the second Full Moon in the same calendar month.

A Blood Moon happens during a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth blocks the light from the Sun and the Full Moon appears to turn red in the night sky.

A lunar eclipse happens just two or three times a year, always at a Full Moon, but not at every Full Moon.

And still, not every lunar eclipse is a total lunar eclipse or Blood Moon — this is the first since 2015.

(The orbits of the Earth, Moon and Sun need to line up in a certain way for a Full Moon to be a total lunar eclipse or Blood Moon).

Add to this that the Moon has an elliptical orbit, so the Moon will be closer to the Earth (or at perigee) at some times, and therefore some Full Moons, more than others.

When the moon is at perigee, this is called a Super Moon. We have Super Full Moons relatively frequently. This particular Blood Moon is not super close to perigee, but is still technically a Super Moon.

Add the third element in the lunar trifecta… the current accepted definition of a Blue Moon is when a Full Moon is a second Full Moon in a calendar month, which only happens once every couple of years.

We started 2018 with a Full Moon and we’re ending it with another on 31 January, most places in the world.

So with Full Moons bookending the month, we have our Super Blue Blood Moon!

    What does it mean….?!

Well, without buying into too much of the hype around the latest fancy moon-moniker… (the Gregorian monthly calendar being man-made, for starters…!)

Full Moons tend to amplify, and eclipses tend to accelerate.

With lots of attention on THIS moon, make sure you take this opportunity under the moonlight to get super clear about what you want to create in your life, consciously let go of any ties holding you back from your dreams, and move forwards with direction, focus — and perhaps extra speed.”

    Thank you Dr. Ezzie!

NOW, bring your journal to your heart-space

Breathe and intend that through pen/pencil and paper,
your True Wisdom, Divine Guidance and Profound Clarity will speak.

And so it is … Ashe Aho Amen

    Journal Prompts:

“What is self-care anyway?  How do I define self-care?”

Start with “I define self-care as …..”  Write for as long as you need and then assess if you currently have daily rituals of nourishment in your life and if you do, how do they measure with your definition of self-care.

(I define self-care as no to low cost daily loving interactions with myself and my environment that emphasize mindfulness and presence, heart-centerd connection, spiritual alignment and physical and emotional nourishment stimulating feelings and sensations of peace and pleasure. Self-care may involve others however the participation of others is not required. xoxo Jocelyn)

    “What needs to change?”

    “What can I celebrate?”

Once complete, get a scarf put on your favorite Divine Feminine inspired music and dance and sing and cry and laugh!

You creating the time space to inquire within, to listen, to receive and to celebrate is an expression of self-care.

Be sure to download my self-care chart, acknowledge your ceremony
and keep in the flow with daily rituals of nourishment.

When I’m nourished, when my cup is full,
    my inspiration and creativity soar,
    my intuition skyrockets,
my mood becomes more consistently positive
    and my relationships improve.

    Self-Care Is Essential

A Mother’s Love – My Journey With Essential Oils

My journey with essential oils started 17 years ago with the birth of my first daughter - Jordan. Shortly after coming home from the birthing center, and immediately following giving her a bath, Jordan presented with small bumps all over her skin.  I immediately called her pediatrician who diagnosed her over the phone with eczema and “wrote” a prescription for a topical corticosteroid for application to her very young skin.  I knew I didn’t want to start my daughter’s life dependant on topical medical creams and petroleum based ointments so I began researching natural remedies and started treating her skin with shea butter and lavender essential oil (diluted for infants).  Check out her beautiful skin now!  Side note:  I now know that newborn skin does not need to be immediately bathed.  The vernix caseosa - the cheesy, waxy coating on newborns’ skin - acts as a natural moisturizer and protective barrier. Let it be.  More on that later.

    Prenatal Nourishment

15 years later, Sienna was preparing to come into the world.  Whilst pregnant, I was working my home-based wellness business, living outside of my home country and enjoying the wonderful experience of having a teenage daughter.  For stress reduction and to nourish my body and balance my mood, I massaged my body with frankincense and sandalwood diluted in coconut oil.  I anointed my belly with Immortelle blend (luxurious and wonderful!) to help minimize stretch marks.  doTERRA’s Serenity blend (the calming blend) was frequently diffused to help me get to sleep.

    The Birthing Space

Sienna was born at home. Our birthing space was a warm and loving altar with items from her Blessing Way, diffusion of Serenity and low lighting - a lovely ambience.  Shortly after coming into the world, Sienna was anointed with diluted frankincense near her crown and diluted myrrh oil on her navel - high vibration, spiritually re-knowned oils applied with the intention to welcome her to the world and to acknowledge her divinity.

    Postpartum Self-Care

My postpartum journey was rocky (postpartum hormonal shifts plus the hormonal shifts of my teenage daughter - wooah!!!) - I was inspired and depleted.  In love and feeling both full and empty.  I didn’t have time for my former self-care practices.  Although my beloved essential oils had always been my allies, I had to create space for reverential connection with my body and energy.  A year in, I committed to a daily self-massage practice and for 20 - 40 minutes each day, lovingly massaged myself from head to toe with warm coconut oil that I enhanced with my essential oils and matched with prayerful affirmations.  This single and simple daily effort created compounding nourishing benefits for which I am so grateful.

    Massage & Yoga Therapy

Rewind a moment back to the initiation of parenting with Jordan.  When I was pregnant, I was also attending the Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy in New York City.  Upon certification as a Massage Therapist, and in my professional practice in Washington, D.C., I started incorporating pure, therapeutic grade essential oils into my bodywork sessions.  The results were astounding - in my clients, I saw an immediate reduction in inflammation, improvements in respiration and observed the near to immediate activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (Rest & Digest Mode) and the relaxation response.  I also noticed the difference between the standard spa essential oils and the certified pure therapeutic grade oils I was using from my own oil apothecary.  The spa oils seemed to go rancid.  They didn't smell alive.  I could sense additives and cutting agents.  My body resisted them - I couldn't put them on my body and I certainly wouldn't apply them to others.

    The Beat Goes On

My somatic studies continue and include teaching Anatomy, Kinesiogy and Swedish Massage at the Heritage Institute in Northern Virginia, completing a 2000 hour yoga therapy training - Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, became a 200hrRYT, achieved children's Kundalini Yoga certification and more.  I've had the pleasure of leading essential oils workshops in churches, raw chef and doula trainings, yoga studios and festivals, with couples, pregnant moms and more. My husband and I created Chakra Clarity a music and meditation journey that incorporates sound healing frequency, guided meditation and essential oils to journey you into deep relaxation, clarity and self-healing.  Purchase and download Chakra Clarity here. Whether in the home, working with clients hands on or on the mat, I've seen essential oils deepen awareness, soothe sore muscles, calm a stressed mind, uplift energy and contribute to wellness as a tool contributing to balance and addressing dis-ease.

Let me help you activate and deepen your journey with essential oils.

In 2015, after doing my due diligence on the company, I became a doTERRA Wellness Advocate.  As a Wellness Advocate I sell their amazing certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils and I educate on how to use them safely and effectively.  I never diagnose or prescribe - I only provide evidance based guidance within my own scope of practice and drawing from my 17 year journey with these powerful plant healers.  If you're new to essential oils, visit my Essential Oils Education page to discover what they are and how they can be incorporated into your lifestyle.

A Lifestyle Hack That Will Help You Meet Your Fitness & Wellness Goals

A couple of times a year, I play a little game, a hack that helps me refocus on and update my wellness practices.

Rather than committing to eliminating and “giving up” things, I ADD a healthy habit, action or food.

This reboot cycle lasts a month to three months and I add a new habit every 5-14 days. The more resistance I have to adding the particular action or ritual, the longer I commit to a daily practice before adding a new habit.

So, if my emphasis is on hydration and cellular rejuvenation, I commit to drinking X cups of water every day for X days.

At the end of the week, I acknowledge and celebrate my success, from there, I add another habit such as “drink a minimum of five green juices a week”

I continue drinking or exceeding my daily quota of water, as well as, nourishing myself with healthy greens and after 7 days or so, I add a ritual such as daily dry brushing or enhancing my hoop practice with 10 minutes of Breath Of Fire.

Now you might say, “at that pace,” it will take you forever to _______________ (fill in the blank: loose weight, reduce stress, balance hormones, gain more energy), however I’m less focused on speed and more focused on establishing healthy habits that endure.

This practice makes me feel abundant, successful and motivated.

What is your health focus at the moment? How are you feeling called to upgrade your well-being?

Post below and share your goals with me.
